May 19, 2015 07:16 pm | Updated 07:16 pm IST - RAICHUR

As compared to last year, Raichur performance in II Pre-University examinations continued to be disappointing this year as well, except for a slight improvement in the overall passing rate.

The district rose from its 30th position to 29th position in the districts' performance grid but it remained at the bottom. The overall passing rate is improved by just 0.5 per cent as compared to previous year.

Off the 16,229 candidates, including 3,757 repeaters, appeared for the examination, 7,131 have passed in all subjects (43.94 per cent). The passing rate in fresher segment (54.88 per cent) is far higher than that of repeater segment (20.52 per cent).

The girls have performed better as compared to boys in overall passing. 3,654 of 6,823 girl-students (53.55 per cent) and only 3,477 of 9,406 boys have (36.97 per cent) passed in all subjects. Similarly, the English medium students have better performed with 47.44 per cent passing as compared to Kannada-medium students whose passing has stood at 42.97 percent.

The performance of Commerce students in fresher segment is better with 60.59 per cent of passing followed by students of Science (54.89 per cent) and Arts (51.68 per cent). There is not much difference in passing rate between Urban students (54.46 per cent) and Rural students (56.50 per cent).

Lecturers’ crunch :

The poor performance of the district in II PU examination is widely attributed to shortage of teaching faculties in government PU Colleges. As per the details provided by Deputy Director of Pre-University Education (DDPU) C.T. Kallayya, of the 359 sanctioned lecturer posts, 100 posts including 17 posts of commerce lecturers, 13 posts history lecturers, 12 posts English lecturers and 10 posts of economics lecturers are vacant.

“The vacancies are filled with temporary guest lecturers to minimise the damage. Besides, the government had sent 60 lecturers from the district for B.Ed studies in the current academic year,” the officer told The Hindu on Tuesday.
