In a bid to provide protection to students and staff and to ensure comprehensive monitoring of activities, the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) has decided to install CCTV cameras at all vital places on its campus.

The State government-run autonomous medical college has a full-fledged 550-bed hospital and is located on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.

Established in 2005, the college has been functioning on a sprawling 25 acres. It offers pre-clinical and para clinical, clinical courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, Community Medicine, Paediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.

The diploma in Health Inspector, Medical Laboratory Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Medical Record Technology, Ophthalmic Technology, and X-Ray Technology too attract students from different States. MIMS also offers internship courses.

Subsequently, the governing body has decided to install CCTV cameras at all important locations in the campus, a senior MIMS official told The Hindu on Tuesday.

He said that a tender (through e-procurement) was already invited from the eligible persons/firms to install the CCTV cameras. A pre-bid meeting was held a few days back. Incidents of people attacking staff at hospitals and colleges, miscreants illegally entering educational institutions and misbehaving with the students/staffs have been often reported across the country and these instances have prompted the institution to enhance its security by installing surveillance cameras, he said.

Such cameras have been already installed at a few places, including director’s chambers. The high-resolution cameras that can capture images even during poor light will be soon installed at the remaining places. The round-the-clock footage will be stored for a particular period to monitor the activities. Such move is expected to improve the quality of education, preventing unsavoury incidents besides instilling a secure feeling among the students, the official explained.

MIMS has already appointed a good number of security guards to provide protection to its staffs and students.
