Indian cities constitute three distinct types – historical town, the newly planned development and the unplanned and informal development.
Master planning
While there is growing consciousness regarding the existence of historical towns and the informal steps in the planning of our cities, the dominant trends in upbringing and urban planning practice are predominantly concerned with master planning, according to the University School of Design, Mysuru. Existing Town and Country Planning Acts do, however, provide for special area development, which could, if sensitively applied, meet the specific needs of historical areas and also recognise the needs of potentialities of the informal sector, it said in a release here.
