Medical and dental seat aspirants from Hyderabad Karnataka region are in for a shock as they have been denied the 8 per cent reservation in colleges outside the region as per the provisions of the Article 371(J) of the Constitution. The interim stay order issued by the High Court of Karnataka against extending reservation in colleges outside the region has been cited as the reason.
As per the seat matrix announced by the State government for admission to medical, dental, engineering, architecture and other professional courses this year, students from the region have been extended reservation benefits in seats available under the government quota within and outside the region. However, as per the latest information available, private managements, which had denied the reservation benefits from their quota in colleges outside the region, have surprisingly extended the facilities to students in professional courses, including engineering and architecture, in colleges outside the region.
Last year, the students from the region who first tasted the benefits of reservation under Article 371 (J) had got their share of reservation in medical, dental, engineering and other professional courses in colleges within and outside the region. Incidentally, most of the private medical and dental colleges were outside the region. Of the 20 private medical colleges and three deemed varsity-run medical colleges, only three private medical colleges were from the region and none of the three medical colleges under the deemed varsity status were from the region.
The denial of 8 per cent of seats in colleges outside the region would have a deterring effect on the academic prospects of the students and deny them their share of opportunities in professional courses, particularly medical and dental courses, in colleges outside the region.
Last year, students from the Hyderabad Karnataka region got medical seats up to 17,000 rank due to the extension of the reservation benefits in colleges outside the region.
