A man and his wife, who eked out a living as labourers, were killed in a blast reportedly caused by leaking LPG in their house at Panchasheelanagar near Vijaynagar on Wednesday evening. The police identified the deceased as Shivanna, 50, and Mangamma, 45, both long-time residents of the area.

According to the police, the couple returned from work on Wednesday around 4 p.m., and switched on the fan in the room. Moments later, their was a blast. The asbestos sheet roofing of their house imploded with the blast. The couple was killed on the spot. A fire tender was summoned to douse the blaze.

Report sought

Ravi B. Chennannavar, DCP (West), said they suspect there was a gas leak in the house when the couple had been out. When they switched on the fan, an electric spark triggered the blast.

“We have asked the Fire and Emergency Services Department and HP Gas to conduct a technical investigation and submit a report on what caused the blast,” he said.
