The city police have arrested a person on charge of cheating members of women self-help groups (SHGs) of Rs. 50 lakh.

The police said that D. Manjunath would approach the SHGs saying he was the director of a rural development centre approved by the government and promised to offer them a loan for five times the amount deposited with the centre. A Chamundeshwari women self-help group, suspecting foul play, asked him to come to the SHG’s office to collect a deposit of Rs. 10 lakh, but he did not appear. Manjunath has not been reachable for a few weeks now. Based on a complaint filed by members of SHGs, the police have arrested Manjunath.
