In the wake of sharp decline in the prices of arecanut from the past month, a delegation of members of the Malnad Areca Marketing Cooperative Society (MAMCOS) met national vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party B.S. Yeddyurappa at his residence in the city recently.
In a press release, Subrahmanya Yadegere, vice-president of MAMCOS, said that the prices of saraku, rashi, api and other varieties of arecanut had declined by around 25 percent in the past month, creating panic among farmers.
Cheap imports
The demand for locally-grown arecanut had come down owing to the increase in import of cheap-quality arecanut from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The delegation requested Mr. Yeddyurappa to take necessary measures to stabilise prices.
Mr. Yeddyurappa told the delegation that MPs from Karnataka would apprise the Union government of the problems faced by arecanut growers.
They would also meet Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman and request her to impose a ban on the import of arecanut to protect the interests of the farmers here.
