The former Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala V.S. Malimath has said that the lack of serious steps to prevent offences is leading to an increasing tendency of committing crimes.
Delivering the convocation address of Rani Channamma University (RCU) here on Wednesday, he observed that man was behaving worse than beasts and people acquiring high degrees from universities committing crimes on innocent persons, including teenage girls, indicated a crisis of character.
“Violence and brutality increasing; new and heinous offences being committed with impunity; corruption spreading like a cancer in all spheres; private and public property being destroyed; brides and wives being burnt or harassed by the educated people for dowry; and rapes and sexual abuses are being committed by the very persons who should be preventing them — teachers raping students, doctors molesting patients, religious preachers raping their disciples and adults molesting young kids in the family and neighbour.”
Emphasising on the need for character building, Mr. Malimath quoted educationists, philosophers and world leaders and pointed out that even the International Commission of Development of Education of UNESCO in it report ‘Learning To Be’ had stressed that the fundamental aim of education was to ensure emotional and ethical integration of the individual into a complete man. Mr. Malimath said the problem of a “crisis of character” was widespread and was affecting the entire nation. The situation called for urgent remedial measures to liberate the nation from it.
