Kuvempu University has decided to conduct a probe into the faux pas in conducting the course work examinations for candidates who had enrolled for Ph.D. programme at the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Political Science.
The examinations for 18 Ph.D. students was scheduled to be held from June 21 to 23. A notification related to the exam was issued on June 9 and hall tickets were dispatched to all students through post.
But when the students appeared for the examination on June 21, they were told that the question paper was not prepared. The examination was then postponed. Students, who had come from Davangere, Chitradurga and Chikkamagaluru districts, to attend the exam lodged a complaint with the Vice-Chancellor over this negligence.
Following the incident, Vice-Chancellor Jogan Shankar directed Registrar (Evaluation) Raja Nayak to conduct a probe and submit a report to him.
Mr. Nayak told The Hindu that the university would issue show-cause notices to Chandrashekhar K., chairperson of the department, and Shanmukha A., associate professor, seeking an explanation from them. Both were also members of the Board of Examination of the department that is assigned with the responsibility of conducting exams, he said.
The examination wing of the university had sent written intimation to the department on the examination for course work. Preliminary inquiry has revealed that the professor who was assigned the responsibility of framing the question paper was on leave. However, the department could have made alternative arrangement to frame the paper or could have postponed the examination to avoid the embarrassment, he said.
