Meera Saksena, Chairperson of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC), said she would be seeking a report from the Goa government on the exact reasons for the eviction of Kannadigas residing on Baina beach.
Responding to questions by presspersons here on Wednesday, Ms. Saksena said she came to know about the incident through the media and was not aware of the exact reason for the eviction.
“What I read in a section of newspapers was that the eviction was carried out to prevent illegal activities and also for illegal occupation. This (eviction) is not the first time. Earlier too, the residents on Baina beach were evicted. However, I will seek a detailed factual report on the matter from the Goa government,” she said. She was also of the view that everyone residing along the beach may not be from Karnataka and there may be migrants from other States too.
Around 157 huts on Baina beach were demolished by the South Goa Collector erected in the ‘no development zone’ and the people residing there, primarily poor migrant workers from Karnataka, were rendered homeless. Ms. Saksena, talking about the recent hysterectomy cases reported in Kalaburagi by a private hospital, said the Commission had taken the issue seriously and had sought a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner.
“It appears to be a money-making racket indulged in by a few medical professionals. I have directed that no hysterectomies should be conducted until the Deputy Commissioner has submitted the report. I have also been directing the district administrations of other districts to keep a watch on similar incidents and to initiate steps to prevent them,” she said.
She said approaching the KSHRC for redressal of grievances had been made simple. A toll-free number (1800-4252-3333) has been introduced through which any person could lodge a complaint, she said.
