The Sri Devaraj Urs Academy for Higher Education and Research Employees Union has appealed to the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) demanding action against the management of R.L. Jalappa Central School for violating children’s rights.

The school was accused of debarring seven students, wards of employees of the Academy which runs the school as well, on pretext of non-payment of fees.

The incident took place on June 15 and the parents brought it to the notice of Block Education Officer (BEO). “The administrator of the school Hanumantharao summoned the parents and threatened them and also instructed the principal not to allow the said students if fees was not cleared”, the Union said in a memorandum, submitted to the Chairperson of the Commission.

Though the wards of the employees of the Academy were given 50 per cent concession in the fees, they were victimised for forming a trade union by the staff of the Academy, it said.

The students were mentally and physically harassed by making them stand under the sun. This is gross violation of children’s rights as well as the violation of Right to Education Act, the memorandum signed by the president K.S. Jagannath and General Secretary H.S. Fairoz Khan, maintained. “The management has denied the right to education of the children,” they said.

It demanded action against the management and the administrator.
