It may now be ‘55’ for ‘5’ for free

University promises to consider refunding fee for photocopy of answer script

Milana K.’s angst over shelling out Rs. 850 for a photocopy of her answer script may have died down for the moment.

The University of Mysore has now promised to consider refunding the amount paid for the photocopy.

The first-year student of B.Com. at Government First Grade College for Women, Hassan, found that she had failed in the Kannada paper, getting only 5 out of 80 marks. This, while she had got first class in all other subjects. So she applied for a photocopy of her answer script by paying a fee of Rs. 850, only to find that she had in fact scored 55 marks. A report in this regard was published in these columns on Tuesday.

Ms. Milana questioned why she should not get a refund of the fee given that the error was not hers but that of the staff of the university. She has now been told that her case would be treated as a special one. The university does not usually repay the fee to students. D. Shrijay Devaraj Urs, Registrar (Evaluation), told The Hindu over phone on Wednesday that the student’s request would be considered and would be placed before the Syndicate. “I can’t take a decision on this. It has to go to the Syndicate,” he said.
