Karnataka Sahitya Academy president Malati Pattanashetti has stressed the need for involving the rural youth for the conservation and promotion of Kannada.

She was here on Monday to inaugurate the Kannada Taluk Sahitya Sammelan at Uppina Betageri village in Dharwad taluk.

Lauding the initiative taken by the parishat in holding the literary convention in village, Prof. Malati said literary conventions could help sensitise the rural mass, especially the youth, towards issues concerning the language.

President of the sammealan Dharanendra Kurakuri highlighted the need for the government to initiate steps to end the conflict between the State and Goa regarding the sharing of the Mahadayi waters.

Agitation

Prof. Kurakuri said that despite the Gokak agitation highlighting the cause of Kannada, English language continued to dominate over Kannada. It should be stopped by giving prominence to Kannada. He also highlighted the need to convince the apex court on the medium of instruction issue and that of prevailing upon the Centre to bring a constitutional amendment to protect the interests of regional languages.

Regretting the negative reports concerning the Rashtrakavi title, he said that north Karnataka writers had been neglected so far although writers like Channaveera Kanavi had all the eligibility for the honour.

Kumar Virupaksha swamy of Uppinabetageri Moorusavir Viraktha Mutt, president of the district unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Lingaraj Angadi and taluk unit president Guru Tigadi were present.
