Disqualified MLA R. Roshan Baig, who had been detained by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the multi-crore IMA scam earlier this year, has been termed as “witness” in the case by Governor Vajubhai Vala.

Mr. Baig had been detained on July 16 at Kempegowda International Airport while trying to board a charted flight to Pune and questioned twice.

In a letter to SIT chief B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda on July 17 — a day after Mr. Baig was picked up by the SIT — Mr. Vala said: “Since Mr. Baig is a witness in the investigation conducted by the SIT in the I Monetary Advisory case, do needful for his safety, freedom and free movement.”

The letter, which has come to light recently, shows Mr. Vala quoting a letter from Mr. Baig to the Bengaluru city Police Commissioner written on July 16 seeking police protection. Mr. Vala points out that the Police Commissioner has assured security of Mr. Baig and his family.

Meanwhile, the SIT officials refused to comment on the role of Mr. Baig. He was questioned based on the statement of the kingpin of the scam and his role was cleared during the course of investigation and corroborating the evidences gathered, an officer said. He also pointed out that the case was now being handled by the CBI.
