Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLA, said on Monday that most of the 4,436 Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes hostels in the State were in a pathetic condition.
Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Poojary said that nearly four lakh students were residing in these hostels. When the BJP sought a house committee to study the condition of these hostels, the State government turned it down. This showed not only lack of transparency but also the poor condition of these hostels.
Hence, the BJP had formed its own three committees to study the condition of these hostels. The committees had visited about 75 per cent of these hostels, and found that hostels did not even have proper drinking water and toilets.
Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya himself had admitted that there were irregularities to the tune of Rs. 19 crore in the purchase of beds and pillows for these hostels and had agreed to conduct a probe on it, Mr. Poojary said.
Shyamala S. Kundar, secretary of the State unit of BJP, said that the leaders of Udupi district BJP SC, ST and Backward Classes Morcha would hold a meeting in the presence of State-level leaders here on November 2.
A team of State-level leaders under the former Minister Govinda Karjol would visit here on the same day for this purpose.
