HESCOM officer, awaiting action in sexual abuse plaint, attempts suicide

January 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - BELAGAVI:

A 27-year-old Assistant Engineer of Hubballi Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM), Sindhu B.V., who lodged a complaint of sexual abuse against her three fellow employees with the Malmaruti police over two months ago, allegedly attempted suicide by consuming an excess dose of a drug.

She was rushed to the district government hospital on Thursday morning by her colleagues.

The doctors attending on her said that she was out of danger. It was around 9 a.m. that she herself called her colleagues at the office and informed them that she had taken some drug and become uncomfortable. The staff rushed to the working women’s hostel where she was staying and shifted her to the hospital. They also found a one-line note “holding T.B. Majjagi responsible for her death”.

Mr. Majjagi is HESCOM’s Rural Division Executive Engineer and an accused along with storekeeper M.T. Takkalaki and lineman Maruti Doddamani in the case.

Meanwhile, district Janata Dal (S) general secretary Yusuf A. Athani said that Ms. Sindhu would not have attempted suicide if the police had taken action against the accused immediately after receiving her complaint.

Though the Home Minister himself directed the Police Commissioner on December 30, 2014 to take action on the Ms. Sindhu’s complaint, action has not been taken so far. He alleged that the ruling Congress government was protecting the accused instead of bringing them to justice.
