Henberu case: police arrest one on charge of murder, sexual assault

Another youth detained on charge of destroying evidence

The police have arrested a youth on charge of sexually assaulting and murdering a 17-year-old girl at Henberu village near Byndoor in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on July 17.

The youth was arrested in Byndoor on Friday night. They have also detained another youth on charge of destroying evidence.

The accused has been identified Sunil alias Keppe (19), who is a resident of Yojana Nagar in Yedthare village, while the person who has been detained is Akshay (19).

A 17-year-old girl had been found dead under suspicious circumstances at Henberu village near Byndoor on June 17. The incident sparked protests by college students in Byndoor and Kundapur towns.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Amrit Paul, IGP (Western Range), said that on June 17, Sunil followed the girl, caught her and strangulated her to death and then tried to sexually assault her. He then fled from the scene, he said. Due to efforts by the district police, the case had been cracked in two days, he said.

Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai was present.
