Expressing concern over shortage of public prosecutors to conduct trials in various taluk and district courts in the State, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday asked the State Advocate-General Udaya Holla to take up the issue with the State authorities.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Aravind Kumar pointed out to the A-G that the judicial officers had told the High Court that only one public prosecutor is available for two to three courts, and these prosecutors are attending court once or a twice a week. The government wants the High Court to appoint judicial officers, and when the judicial officers are available, there aren’t sufficient prosecutors to conduct trial, the Chief Justice said, while observing that this scenario is seriously troubling the administration of justice.
The Bench was hearing a PIL petition filed by Umapathi S, an advocate, seeking direction to the State to appoint a review committee for analysing the reasons for acquittal of accused in criminal cases as per the directions of the apex court
