The work of developing a residential layout for the Hakki-Pikki community at Veerannana Benavalli village in Ayanur gram panchayat is likely to be completed by the end of August.

Of the 70 acres of land belonging to the Revenue Department on the outskirts of Veerannana Benavalli, the district administration had allotted fours acres of land to develop a residential layout for the members of Hakki-Pikki community.

Rakesh Kumar K., ZP CEO, told The Hindu that the land has been handed over to Ayanur GP. Initially, there was confusion regarding the boundary of the land. However, the work of surveying the land and fixing its boundary was completed in the second week of May.

The responsibility of developing the layout has been assigned to the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd. Mr. Kumar said that the Assistant Executive Engineer of the corporation has been directed to complete the work of forming the layout in an expedited manner.

The corporation will take a decision on the dimension of the sites based on the number of beneficiaries. It is possible to form 80 sites measuring 30x40 ft dimension on the four acres of land. However, as the number of eligible families are around 200, the corporation will be directed to reduce the dimension of the sites to accommodate them here. Mr. Kumar said necessary civic amenities, including drinking water, power connection, roads, drains, among others will be provided at the new layout.

A few members of Hakki-Pikki community had staged a protest in the city recently alleging that some persons, belonging to non-nomadic communities, were trying to secure sites at the allotted land. Mr. Kumar said that the administration would take due measure to ensure that only eligible persons get the sites. The selection will be made by convening the meeting of the Gram Sabha of Ayanur. The applicants will be asked to furnish necessary information on their domicile. A thorough verification will be done to avoid allotment of sites to the nomadic families that have already got sites under other housing schemes of the government, he added.
