Commercial tax practitioner B.T. Manohar has been on his toes, running from one GST workshop to the next across the State, over the last few months.
He has been conducting awareness workshops sponsored by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce in coordination with the Commercial Tax Department and Central Excise Department.
Like him, several chartered accountants and tax experts are swamped with work in the run-up to the GST rollout, with confused traders seeking clarification on how to make the transformation.
Most small traders are approaching auditors to know the HSN (Harmonised System Nomenclature) code for the commodities they trade. Another area of concern is the calculation of input tax carrying forward to GST for stocks that they have as on June 30.
“Merchants may be finding it difficult to figure out the tax rate for their commodities, which is why they are approaching chartered accountants and auditors,” said Mr. Manohar.
Chartered accountant Srinath Adiga said: “We have to deal with clients wanting to know how to file returns and the cost impact of GST. Many traders and businessmen seem to have not taken the training programmes seriously and are now seeking clarifications.”
Another private practitioner added that it was mostly small and medium traders who were approaching them.
