Member of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Vijayakumar came down heavily on the officials of the State government for their indifferent attitude towards implementing welfare schemes meant to help safai karamcharis. Chairing a meeting to review various welfare programmes meant to benefit safai karamcharis here on Wednesday, Mr. Vijaykumar expressed his dismay and shock over the non-payment of compensation to the family of safai karamchari Raju Mir Singh who died while clearing a sewage line here in 2001.

Commissioner of the City Corporation Shrikant Kattimani said that Parvati Raju Mir Singh, wife of the deceased safai karamchari, has been provided a government job on compassionate grounds.

He said that he was not aware about the payment of compensation of Rs. 10 lakh due to her.

Mr. Vijayakumar directed the Commissioner to immediately pay Rs. 10 lakh compensation to Ms. Singh and report back to the commission.

Delay

He also took serious exception to the complaints made by Shankarappa Dargi about the alleged delay in providing employment to the relatives of Devamma Basawant, a pourakarmika, who died in 2014.

“Look into the complaint and file an action report to the commission immediately,” he said. Mr. Vijayakumar also directed Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal, who was present at the meeting, to order an inquiry into the complaints against the concerned official of the Social Welfare Department for the non-release of the scholarship amount due to the children of the safai karamcharis studying in schools and colleges.

He did not agree with the contention of the officials that the scholarship could not be released due to the failure of the beneficiaries to provide the bank account numbers.

“This cannot be the reason for denial of the scholarship amount. It is your duty to ensure the release of scholarship due to the students,” he said.

Mr. Vijayakumar also directed the concerned departments to conduct awareness camps in all localities dominated by pourakarmikas and safai karamcharis.

He also said that the civic authorities should conduct regular medical camps for safai karamcharis and their family members in their colonies. Superintendent of Police Amit Singh and Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat Anirudh Sravan were present.
