Noted litterateurs Go. Ru. Channabasappa, T.V. Venkatachala Sastry, and Bhashyam Swamy have been selected for the prestigious Nadoja Award given by Kannada University, Hampi.
University Vice-Chancellor Sa. Chi. Ramesh, addressing a media conference on the campus on Thursday, said Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who was also the Chancellor of the university, would present the awards at the 30th convocation of the university on Tuesday.
“Eight persons, including G. Krishnappa, Maleyur Guruswamy, S.C. Sharma, Gurulinga Kapase, Shivananda Nayak, Ramesh M.K., and Nasir Ahammad, were recommended for the Nadoja Award this time. However, the Governor has selected three of them. Go. Ru. Channabasappa hails from Gondedahalli in Chikkamagaluru district and worked mainly in folk literature. T.V. Venkatachala Sastry is from Mysuru and made significant contributions to Halegannada and Shatra literature. Bhashyam Swamy is from Melkote in Mandya district and worked on Sanskrit literature,” Mr. Ramesh said.
The Vice-Chancellor added that Murugarajendra Swamy of Chitradurga Mutt, senior journalist Padmaraja Dandavathi, Kempegowda Study Centre head B.S. Puttaswamy, and environment activist Kalkuli Vittal Hegde would be honoured with D.Litt.
“Higher Education Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan would present the D.Litt awards and degrees to 1,387 students in the convocation. Tejasvi Kattimani, Vice-Chancellor of the Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh, would deliver the convocation address,” Mr. Ramesh said.
₹4.64 crore grants
Responding to a question, Mr. Ramesh said that the State Government had sanctioned ₹4.64 crore to the university and the amount would be released in a phased manner.
“Appropriate measures would be initiated to ensure pension to those who have retired from the university. As much as ₹69 lakh has been released for disbursing compensation to farmers who lost their lands for the university and Assistant Commissioner would disburse the compensation. I am trying to get jobs in the university for 14 people who had lost lands,” Mr. Ramesh said.
