Give time frame for selecting SPCA chief: High Court

July 05, 2019 01:25 am | Updated 01:25 am IST - Bengaluru

The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday directed the State government to file an affidavit stating the time frame within which the government will initiate and complete the process of filling up the post of State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA) chairperson.

The court also directed the State to provide the measures taken for providing adequate infrastructure, staff and other facilities for efficient functioning of the Authority.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice H.T. Narendra Prasad issued the direction during the hearing of a PIL petition filed by Sudha Katwa, resident of Bengaluru.

The petitioner complained that the post of chairperson (retired judge of high court) has been lying vacant since August 2017 following the resignation of the then chairperson, and no action had been taken by the government to fill up the post. It was pointed out that complaints against all ranks of police personnel and officers were pending and thereby, so was justice to complainants.
