Hassan district Chid Protection Officer on Monday rescued a three-and-a-half-year-old girl from begging.

V. Geetha, Child Protection Officer, told The Hindu that she received information from a resident of Sharief Colony that two children were seen begging on the streets. “Balakrishna, resident of Sharief Colony, informed us that two children were begging in their locality. By the time we reached the spot, there was only one child, and she was accompanied by a woman,” she said.

The woman did not give a clear reply when she was asked personal details, like her name and native place. “Once, she said that she was Neela, after a few minutes, she changed it to Hasina. Even with regard to her native place, the woman mentioned different names. We are not sure if she is the mother of the baby,” she said. The child has been provided shelter at the Child Helpline centre. At present, both the baby and the woman are in the custody of the Child Protection Officer.
