Close on the heels of the arrest of six members of the Irani gang from Pune over a month ago, fresh incidents of chain-snatching were reported from different locations in the city on Sunday.
Mohammed Sayyad Irani, the kingpin of the Irani gang, is presently incarcerated in the Yerwada Central Jail at Pune.
A man on a motorbike snatched a gold chain weighing 16 g from Jayapradha Shinde, and a mangalsutra weighing 25 g from Prema Ashok of Hattargi in Hindwadi, under the Tilakwadi Police Station limits in a gap of fifteen minutes. The modus operandi was similar to that adopted by the Irani gang, making the police and residents suspicious that other members of the gang were striking back with vengeance.
However, the possibility of other another gang being involved has not been ruled out. The police personnel launched a man hunt soon after the incident and checked two wheelers parked at different localities in the city.
Cyber crime
The city police, which conducted surprise check at 46 cyber cafes on Saturday, arrested eight cyber café owners on the charge of allowing pornography and registered cases under different police stations.
