Four cows died on Saturday, allegedly after grazing on poisonous weeds. Brothers, Lingappa Ayyappa Hosamni and Channappa Ayyappa Hosmani, of Satyampet village, in Surpur town in Yadgir district, had let their cows out to graze on the outskirts of the village on Friday.

When they were brought back home in the evening, the farmers found them acting strange. Within a few minutes, the animals started to discharge foam from their mouths and nose. Veterinary doctors were brought in but despite their best efforts, the two animals died early on Saturday.

Another two cows belonging to their relatives, which were also undergoing treatment, died on Saturday evening, also, reportedly after grazing on weeds.

Rajshekhar, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Department, told The Hindu that despite the ongoing protest by staff, he had directed doctors to provide the required medicine for the treatment of cows.
