Heavy rain lashed the district in the early hours of Sunday. Several villages in the interior regions were inundated owing to overflowing of lakes.
The rain, attributed to Cyclone Helen, commenced at around 2 a.m. and lasted for several hours. Fields on the Mysore-Bannur Road, Melahalli, Harohali, Madegowdanahundi, Nirala and other villages were inundated by water from lakes. Standing crops, mainly sugarcane ready for harvest, were damaged. There were similar reports of inundation owing to the overflowing Ramapura canal. Traffic on the Mysore-Bannur Road was thrown out of gear on Sunday.
The impact of Cyclone Helen was also felt in the city which experienced heavy rain till Sunday morning. Low-lying areas in Medarkeri, Bamboo Bazaar and so on were affected. Similar reports came from Hittavalli village in T. Narsipur taluk where water overflowed from Rajaparameshwari canal and inundated fields. There were reports of crop damage from Mirle in K.R. Nagar. H.D. Kote, Hunsur, Nanjangud and Periyapatna taluks too reported rainfall.
