A man was killed after being struck by lightning and several houses and standing pomegranate crops were damaged as mid-summer rain, accompanied by gusty winds, thunder, lightning and hailstones, lashed the district on Saturday night.

Hanif, a farmer, who was in the field in Nimbalageri village in Kudligi taluk, died after being struck by lightning.

His death came to light only on Sunday morning after his family members went to the fields.

In Haralu village near Kottur in Kudligi taluk, pomegranate crop in about 20 acres were destroyed due to hailstones.

Roof of several tin sheds and huts in Sandur and Kampli were blown off, while several trees were uprooted and electrical poles fell due to gusty winds in many parts of the district, including Sirguppa.
