Real estate dealers have purchased 80 per cent of farm lands in Ilawala village in Mysuru district from farmers who have small holdings of less than two acres. The village is situated on the outskirts of Mysuru city.
Large number of small and marginal farmers had sold their farm lands to real estate dealers when prices boomed in 2006. On an average, the farmers secured a good rate of Rs. 15 lakh per acre, but the farmers failed to reap the benefits. Many farmers who spent the whole amount they got from selling their land, have now become labourers, with their families members working as daily wage workers or domestic help. This was revealed by the Human Development Index prepared jointly by the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat and the University of Mysore.
The index was released here on Friday by Minister for Revenue and district in-charge Minister V. Srinivas Prasad.
