A social boycott has been imposed on a family by residents of Mutuguppe in Sorab taluk for the past 10 days.
Kalappa, a fishmonger at Mutuguppe, was assaulted by a few village residents after a fight during a Ganesh idol immersion procession recently. The victim had lodged a complaint with the police.
Mr. Kalappa told presspersons that after the complaint, a committee of village elders called him for discussions. As he refused to attend, the committee decided to ostracise his family, he said.
Mr. Kalappa’s wife and three children are engaged in arecanut de-husking, a seasonal work.
Social boycott
Mr. Kalappa said that following the social boycott, the arecanut plantation owners refused to give work to his family. They were not allowed to enter the temple and to draw water from the open well in the village, he said.
The family had been barred from entering the houses of others, and those who violated their order had to pay ₹5,000 fine, he said.
In the complaint, Mr. Kalappa named seven persons as responsible for ostracising his family. He lodged the complaint on October 16 and the police are yet to register a case.
