Several shops that had encroached upon the footpaths of the busy Bengaluru-Mysuru highway here were removed by the Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) on Wednesday.

A team led by CMC Commissioner, N.M. Shashikumar conducted the drive and removed shops, which have been causing inconvenience to pedestrians, with the assistance of the police.

Several traders, including a two-wheeler seller, had encroached footpaths of the highway for business purposes. While some traders had constructed walls and staircases, some others had installed advertisement boards and causing nuisance to the people.

While a majority of encroachers voluntarily took away their belongings and removed structures from footpaths, the officials used an earthmover to remove some other structures.

The police officials present at the spot requested the traders not to block the way for pedestrians on footpaths.
