A one-month-old female elephant, which had been separated from its herd near Neralagi village in Sorab taluk, was rehabilitated at Sakrebail elephant camp, near here, on Friday.
The calf was part of a herd of eight elephants that had entered the forest area in Sorab taluk from Dandeli range on October 24. The calf got separated from the herd. Residents of Neralagi village provided food and water to the elephant and handed it over to the Forest Department later.
Efforts to reunite the calf with its herd in the forest near Banavasi in Uttara Kannada and Hangal in Haveri district that share the border with Sorab taluk had proved futile. It is said that the herd had returned to Dandeli range. Since the calf was suffering from de-hydration, it was brought to Sakrebaiu camp for treatment. The staff at Sakrebail camp have named the elephant as Rani.
