DSS seeks probe into projects taken up by Nirmiti Kendra

January 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Shivamogga:

M. Gurumurthy, convener of the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, on Saturday sought a probe into the schemes implemented by the Nirmiti Kendra at Bhadravati, alleging that they were of poor quality.

Officials of the kendra had violated laws while renovating Dr. Ambedkar Bhavan in Shivamogga and the construction of post-matric hostel for students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs and STs) of the Department of Social Welfare, he alleged. The samiti would lodge a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner in this regard, he said at a press conference here. The construction of a building for the post-matric hostel of the Department of Social Welfare near Bommanakatte locality in Shivamogga for students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes had been assigned to the Nirmiti Kendra, Bhadravati, in 2013. The estimated cost of the project was Rs. 3.37 crore.

Licence not obtained

Although the work had already been completed, no building licence had been obtained for it. Permissions from the Shivamogga Urban Development Authority and Shivamogga City Corporation were not obtained. The samiti had lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of the Shivamogga City Corporation in this regard. Besides, the materials used in the construction of the building were of low quality, he alleged. As a result, the ceiling of the building had started leaking before its inauguration.

The renovation of the Ambedkar Bhavan, which was assigned to Nirmiti Kendra, was carried out in an unscientific manner, he alleged. The renovated building is scheduled for inauguration on January 26. Although the fence around the building had become fragile, it had not been set right. Cracks in the walls of the building were not repaired properly, Mr. Gurumurthy said.
