Drainage system needs overhauling: ACICM

May 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - MYSURU:

Convener of the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysuru (ACICM) M. Lakshmana said that storm-water drains as well as the underground drainage (UGD) network in the city needed urgent overhauling.

Mr. Lakshmana pointed out that the UGD network in the cty was laid about 80 years ago. “The population of the city has increased manifold,” he said adding that it was simply inadequate to handle the city’s current population, which is estimated to be around 13 lakh.

Though Rs. 290 crore was sanctioned under JNNURM for improvement of the SWD and UGD network, the work failed to take off. The authorities should also take steps to delink UGD lines with SWD, he added. “If UGD is let into SWD, it is a health hazard,” he cautioned.
