“Differences of opinion never proved to be hurdle for M.M. Kalburgi, who challenged set beliefs and continued unearthing truth,” critic G.S. Amur said here on Sunday.

Speaking at the ‘Dr. M.M. Kalburgi Nenapu’ programme organised here on Sunday, Mr. Amur said that research was always a dangerous field as it evoked sharp criticism whenever already established notions were questioned. “But, Prof. Kalburgi never allowed the criticism to become a hurdle in his research,” he said.

Prof. Amur said that while politicians never dared to dwell on subjects which might prove dangerous for their political careers, it was only researchers who fought against odds to in search of their quest for truth.

He said after Alur Venkat Rao, it was Prof. Kalburgi who engaged himself in the quest for truth in various fields and in his quest and through his progressive thoughts he endeared himself to many people. Highlighting the need for criticism as a means of expressing difference in a democratic set up, Prof. Amur said that they should pave the way for exchange of new ideas and deliberation, subsequently leading to churning of ideas and beginning of new traditions.

“But, the society should never accept the killing a person for his thoughts. The murder of Prof. M.M. Kalburgi has left the literary world in a state of shock,” he said.

Remembering experts

Remembering eminent researchers from Dharwad including ‘Shamba’ Joshi, R.S Panchamukhi, P.B. Desai, R.C. Hiremath and others, Prof. Amur said that through his dedicated research and perseverance, Prof. Kalburgi scaled new heights.

He also recalled Prof. Kalburgi’s contribution in building public institutions such as Dr. Da.Ra. Bendre Trust, Kattimani Prathisthan and others. Prof. Amur said only constructive works would help continue the slain researcher’s legacy.
