A total of 136 out of 143 gram panchayats (GPs) will go to polls on May 29, Deputy Commissioner P. Rajendra Cholan has said.
There will be no elections for the remaining seven GPs as their term was not yet concluded, he told presspersons here on Monday. The counting of votes will be held on June 5.
The district got 16 new GPs after the delimitation process. Special teams have been made to monitor the election process and book cases for those violating the model code of conduct. The code of conduct for GP election is in force from May 10 to June 7.
The process of filing nomination papers began on Monday and the last day to file nomination papers is May 18. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on May 19 and the last date to withdraw nomination papers is May 21.
The district has nearly 5.80 lakh eligible voters, of which 3.01 lakh are male and 2.79 lakh are female. Of the 742 polling stations, 81 have been declared sensitive and 107 hyper-sensitive. There will be 23 ancillary polling stations. A total of 3,109 staff will be deployed for the election process, Mr. Cholan said.
