Janata Dal (Secular) member S.L. Dharme Gowda is set to be elected as Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council on Wednesday as he remains the lone candidate in the fray.

He filed his nomination on Tuesday when the deadline for filing nominations ended. Mr. Gowda, who is believed to have close links with JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda, was elected to the Council in June.

Mr. Dharme Gowda’s selection came as a surprise as there was speculation that senior JD(S) member K.T. Srikante Gowda would be the party nominee.

He is the brother of S.L. Bhoje Gowda, also a Legislative Council member and a close aide of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. His father S.R. Lakshmaiah was a three-time legislator from Birur constituency.
