Demand to expedite work on Shiradi ghat stretch

June 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Hassan:

Residents of Sakleshpur have decided to take out a rally on June 15 in protest against the delay in completing the work of strengthening the Shiradi ghat stretch of National Highway 75.

Sanjeet Shetty, president of the Shiradi Ghat Raste Ulisi Horata Samiti, said at a press conference here on Thursday that the protest rally would start from the old Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus-stand and culminate at the Sakleshpura Swamy temple.

The work, which began in January this year, should have been completed by now. The officials of the Public Works Department had promised the public that the stretch would be opened for vehicular traffic by June first week. So far, the work has not been completed, he said.

The Shiradi Ghat stretch was the only easy access between Bengaluru and Mangaluru. Many industries, businessmen and traders were reliant on the stretch for their daily travelling and transportation of various goods.

“Many people in Sakleshpur have sent their children to Mangaluru for education purposes and they keep travelling to Mangaluru very frequently. They have been very much inconvenienced now because of the closure of the stretch for a long time. The proposed protest aims at putting pressure on the Public Works Department to expeditiously complete the work,” he said.
