Prasanna, theatre personality, has criticised the State government for taking up the Yettinahole project, which, according to him, will be harmful to the environment of Western Ghats.

“The government is spending a huge amount in the name of Yettinahole project, which should be stopped,” he said on Tuesday.

Mr. Prasanna was speaking after inaugurating a three-day workshop for young writers on understanding environment, organised by the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi. Mr. Prasanna, who is leading a campaign to spread awareness on sustainable development, said that diverting the river’s flow or constructing unnecessary roads and indulging such acts had resulted in the decline in rainfall, besides causing climatic change. “We are witnessing untimely rain because of our deeds against the nature,” he said.Terming Yettinahole project a waste, Mr. Prasanna said that politicians were wasting money and time in the name of the project.

“Politicians are promising what they cannot fulfil. As a result, honest officials are forced to ruin nature for implementing the project,” he said.Senior journalist Nagesh Hegde, who is the director of the workshop, in his preliminary remarks, stressed the need for spreading awareness on conservation of nature for future generations.

Malathi Pattanashetty, president of the academy, said that the activities of the academy were not limited to literature.

“We are concerned about environment too. The academy has organised this workshop to respond to issues that are currently disturbing environment,” she said.
