Move comes in the wake of rise in cyber crimes

November 12, 2014 09:48 am | Updated 09:48 am IST - MYSURU:

It’s a race against time for the proprietors of cyber cafes operating in Mysuru city and the district, and those intending to open new ones. The district administration has set December 31 as the deadline for compulsory registration at the office of the deputy commissioner here.

Deputy Commissioner C. Shikha, who after a meeting with officials from various departments at her office here, said the cyber cafes were functioning without proper registration. Such cafes must register immediately.

“The cyber cafes are turning into ideal locations for committing cyber crimes and engaging in anti-social activities. Children are accessing objectionable content through the Internet at these places,” she said.

The owners of cyber cafes must install software that prevents access to objectionable videos and secure their computers, Ms. Shikha said.

The Department of Information Technology has issued prescribed application forms for registration. The registration cost is Rs. 500, and the annual fee for renewing licence is Rs. 300.

The applications can also be submitted online. The police, tahsildar and other local authorities will conduct spot inspections. After inspecting the infrastructure and checking other details, the officials will submit a report with their opinions to her office, according to the deputy commissioner.

ID must

Meanwhile, the owners of cyber cafes have been directed to ask for the identity cards of their customers before allowing them to access the computers.
