The Counting for Gram Panchayat polls was peaceful in Kalaburagi on Friday. As the counting process started, people from various villages were seen thronging to counting centre in respective taluk head quarters to support their candidates.
Around 69.62 per cent of counting had been completed till 4.00 p.m. Out of 1,343 wards the results of 935 wards were declared.
Soon after the results of few Gram Panchayats were announced after the first round, the supporters of the candidates were spilling out on to the streets to celebrate the victory.
Except for some commotion at the main gates of the counting centre at Government Polytechnic College in Kalaburagi on Friday morning at 8 a.m., where large number of people, including the candidates, were struggling to get entry into the counting stations, the entire process was peaceful. The police had made elaborate arrangement to restrict entry to pass holders.
Around 674 tables were arranged in seven counting centres across the district including 120 tables in Kalaburagi, 115 in chittapur, 95 in Sedam, 90 in Aland, 86 in Afzalpur and Jewargi each and 82 tables in Chincholli taluk.
Of the total 4214 seats in the district, polling was held for 727 seats of 39 Gram Panchayats in Kalaburagi taluk, where 56 candidates were elected unopposed.
Polling was held for 658 seats of 40 Gram Panchayats in Aland taluk, for 498 seats of 28 Gram Panchayats in Afzalpur taluk, for 650 seats of 39 Gram Panchayats in Jewargi taluk, 460 seats of 27 Gram Panchayats in Sedam taluk, 696 seats of 40 Gram Panchayat in Chittapur taluk and 525 seats of 30 Gram Panchayats in Chincholli taluk in the district.
Unopposed
As many as 408 candidates including - 56 in Kalaburagi, 57 in Aland, 44 in Afzalpur, 80 in Jewargi, 36 in Sedam, 94 in Chittapur and 41 in Chincholi taluk in the district were elected unopposed. The elections were held to fill 3,781 seats, for which 10,319 candidates contested. The polling turn-out recorded in Kalaburagi district was 76.39 per cent.
Boycott
Two gram panchayats - Bhagodi and Donagoan in Chittapur taluk boycotted the polling for Gram Panchayat elections without filing a single nomination papers.
