The long-pending demand for a district consumer information centre, which acts as a facilitator in protecting consumer rights, has finally been met and is ready for inauguration.
Briefing presspersons about the new facility here on Saturday, N.P. Bhat and Basavaprabhu Hosakeri, representatives of ‘Janadesh’, a non- governmental organisation working for empowering consumers, said that the consumer information centre would be a milestone in the consumer rights campaign.
They said that as the consumers were scattered, they lacked the strength like producers and service providers and were deceived often by them.
Awareness programmes
Mr. Hosakeri said that although a series of awareness programmes were being held on consumer protection and rights, majority of the people were still ignorant of their rights. The centre would act as a facilitator in creating awareness among the consumers of their rights besides help them in filing cases against merchants and service providers in case of violation of consumer rights, he said.
The centre will function under the Department of Food and Civil Supplies and the consumer forums would be the nodal agencies, he said.
The centre will take up the local market study and prepare a chart of the shops wherein quality goods are sold at reasonable price and consumers can approach the centre to get information on various products.
Minister for Food and Civil Supplies and district-in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao will inaugurate the centre located on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Dharwad on Sunday at 3 p.m.
It will be located on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office
