The All India Congress Committee (AICC) is set for an organisational revamp, right from booth-level to national-level within three months, M. Veerappa Moily, MP for Chikkaballapur, has said.
Interacting with presspersons here, the former Chief Minister said he had met AICC president Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi, and other senior leaders recently, adding that revamp is on the cards keeping in mind the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Mr. Moily said the party has to prepare the road map to gain majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Accountability and responsibility would be the benchmark for leaders who lead the party in States.
Leaders not performing well would be replaced with new faces, he said. Change of guard at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is left to the High Command, he added.
On KPCC chief post
Responding to a question, Mr. Moily clarified that he is not a contender for the KPCC chief’s post.
Though he did not become Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee chief, he had held several important posts, including that of the Chief Minister, AICC general secretary and Union Minister, Mr. Moily said and added he did not love the party just for the sake of power.
The former Chief Minister complimented Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the party’s victory in the recently concluded Nanjanagud and Gundlupet Assembly bypolls.
Karnataka has been Congress’ stronghold and no one, including BJP’s Amit Shah, could break it. In fact, the Congress is destined to bag more seats in the 2018 Assembly polls, Mr. Moily said.
On the question of a Dalit becoming Chief Minister in Karnataka, Mr. Moily said caste should not be the consideration for the post. One possessing a progressive thought process and one who is committed to party values should become the leader. The BJP is raising the Dalit CM bogey just to divide people, he alleged.
Says no to ballot papers
Speaking about complaints over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Mr. Moily said it is for the Election Commission to prove that the machines are foolproof.
The Election Commission has to prove that no one can hack them.
If technology is wanting, the Election Commission should take steps to address the issue, Mr. Moily said.
The former Union Minister added that there is no question of going back to ballot papers.
