P. Krishna Bhat, Principal District and Sessions Judge, called for collective efforts to eliminate child labour prevailing in various forms and different sectors in the society.
Inaugurating a function organised on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour by the district administration and District Legal Services Authority and the Belagavi Bar here on Friday, he stressed on the need for the proper assessment and analysis of child labour and the socio-economic, educational and cultural background of the families of the children engaged in various works defined as child labour.
There was also a need for concerted efforts at various levels to enrol every child into school and minimise school drop out rates, even as the Constitution explicitly provides for compulsory education of children between 6 and 14 years.
The objectives of the elimination of child labour bringing all such children into the mainstream of the society could be achieved only with the proactive involvement of various social organisations, NGOs and the parents, Mr.Bhat said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner G.L. Praveen Kumar drew attention to reports of children being employed to work as domestic servants in different parts of the city. Similarly, children were also found working in various sectors in rural areas because of lack of adequate awareness on the issue.
Deputy Labour Commissioner Girish S. Patil, Assistant Director of Women and Child Development M. Muniraju and representatives of various NGOs were present.
