‘Clean India should be realised by 2019’

South Western Railway on Friday launched a special cleanliness drive as part of Gandhi Jayanti and the first anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission at Hubballi Railway Station.

Inaugurating the special drive, Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Prasad Abbayya said that the goal of clean India should be achieved by October 2, 2019 on the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

Additional DRM of Hubballi Division Chandrashekar Sastri said that under the mission, regular events on cleanliness were being organised by the Indian Railway. During the last year, as many as 140 cleanliness drives had been organised throughout the division.

He said that under the initiative tree plantation, removal of encroachment, removing of posters, repairing of street lights, improving of drainage and whitewashing of buildings had been taken up. Steps were also being taken to provide dustbins at all locations in the railway stations and the public were being encouraged to make use of the same, he said.

Chief Medical Superintendent, Central Railway Hospital, Dr. M.N. Ramakanth said the collection of garbage and disposal at nominated places by the local bodies were being implemented in all A and B category stations by outsourcing.

It had already been implemented in Hubballi, Gadag, Ballari and Vijayapura stations, he said.
