The case of the suspicious death of a student in Raichur was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday.

DG&IGP Neelamani Raju issued the order, directing the CID to take over the case.

The student was found dead near Hanumappa temple on Manik Prabhu Hill on April 15. Her parents had filed a complaint, alleging that she was raped and murdered.

The Raichur police arrested the accused following allegation by the victim’s parents that the student had been killed. However, protests intensified when the police termed the incident as suicide, based on a recovered note.

Friends, students and residents staged protests, accusing the local police of misleading the facts of the case and demanded that the government hand over the case to CBI. The family members of the victim also met former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking a fair investigation.

D. Kishore Babu, Superintendent of Police, said the medical report was awaited and declined to reveal more information. He appealed to the public to not spread rumours. The Vishwakarma Samaj said a protest would be staged on April 25, demanding justice for the victim.
