The campaigning for the byelections to Chincholi and Kundagol Assembly segments turned brisk, with the increase of footfall of political leaders from across the State.

While former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha M. Mallikarjun Kharge led the campaign for the party in Chincholi Assembly Constituency on Saturday, the former Chief Minister and BJP State president B.S. Yeddyurappa, accompanied by a host of former Ministers and office-bearers, was busy conducting road shows and holding street meetings in Kundagol constituency.

Saturday saw overall campaign in-charge D.K. Shivakumar busy holding meetings with JD(S) leaders, including CM’s Parliamentary Secretary N.H. Konaraddi and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni for making preparations for the visit of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. He will be campaigning for the coalition candidate on Monday and address two rallies at Kundagol and Varur.

After an overnight stay at Hubballi, Mr. Kumaraswamy will proceed to Chincholi for campaigning.

Canvassing at Arankal village in Chincholi taluk, Mr. Siddaramaiah took a dig at his former partyman Umesh Jadhav and mocked him for dragging his son into politics while he was still studying. “This shows Umesh Jadhav’s eagerness to get power,” he said, seeking an answer from Jadhav on dynastic politics.

Karandlaje takes over

At Chincholi, in the BJP camp, after senior leader R. Ashok left, former Minister Shobha Karandlaje took over the responsibility of campaigning on Saturday. Apart from V. Somanna, several BJP leaders from Raichur are camping in Chincholi.
