Hundreds of sugarcane growers from across the district staged a protest outside the State-owned Mysore Sugar Company Ltd. (Mysugar) here on Monday, where mechanical problems have brought cane-crushing to a halt.

Work at the sugar factory came to a standstill recently following some “technical and mechanical problems.” The authorities concerned, sources at the factory say, have initiated measures to resolve the problem. Nearly 500 farmers, with sugarcane-laden trucks, tractors and bullock carts, were waiting outside the sugar mill on Monday. However, Mysugar officials announced that “the factory had stopped sugarcane-crushing activities because of some technical and mechanical problems.”

Subsequently, farmers staged a flash protest outside the sugar mill. Raising slogans against the Mysugar management, the farmers alleged that the officials concerned had stopped operations “without issuing a public notice in advance.”

“We cannot sell sugarcane to other mills,” they said. They later withdrew the protest after officials promised to resume operations.
