Call to popularise Urdu

May 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - Vijayapura:

Asserting the need to popularise Urdu among non-Muslims, as the language was largely confined to Muslims, Mohammad Mohsin, Commissioner, Primary and Secondary Education, has urged the Karnataka Urdu Academy to open Urdu teaching centres in district headquarters for the purpose.

Speaking at the inauguration of a play by Karnataka Urdu Academy at Ranga Mandir here recently, he said that some people were protesting against the language.

Mr. Mohsin said that a few years ago when Doordarshan, Karnataka, had launched Urdu news there was a strong protest in the State by some section of people.

To eradicate this notion, Urdu should be popularised among non-Muslims also, he said.
