A large number of BJP workers, including top leaders B.S. Yeddyurappa and State unit president Pralhad Joshi, courted arrest here on Sunday after the police prevented them from taking out their protest padayatra to the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

The BJP leaders, who began their padayatra to draw the attention of the government to the plight of the sugarcane farmers from the Badal Ankalagi village in Belagavi taluk, were stopped by the police about 5 km from the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha.

JD(S) State president H.D. Kumaraswamy, demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should either do something concrete for the farmers’ welfare or advise them against taking up farming. Mr. Kumaraswamy is set to complete his padayatra on Monday.
